Jim Slife is a former United States Air Force four-star general officer with over 35 years of distinguished service in global operations, strategic planning, and defense leadership. He concluded his military career as the Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, the service’s second-highest-ranking officer, responsible for shaping strategy and overseeing a $215 billion annual budget for an organization of more than 600,000 personnel.
Throughout his career, Jim held a range of executive-level positions spanning combat operations, international diplomacy, budget management, and institutional transformation. His experience includes service in U.S. Central Command, where he developed some of the nation’s most sensitive operational plans. He also led security cooperation efforts throughout the Middle East and Central Asia, securing military sales and defense agreements that serve as a foundational element of U.S. influence abroad. As Chief of Staff for U.S. Forces Korea, he led a staff of over 1,000 during a period of intense geopolitical tension, a role highlighted on 60 Minutes as he discussed regional dynamics on the Korean Peninsula. At U.S. Special Operations Command, he directed a 2,200-person headquarters and later served as Vice Commander, overseeing a $13.5 billion operating budget and validating requirements for the nation’s 72,000 special operations forces.
Jim also commanded Air Force Special Operations Command, where he led 22,000 personnel through the Afghanistan withdrawal, the COVID-19 pandemic, and numerous global crisis response operations. Under his leadership, the command underwent its largest resource realignment in decades in a transformational effort to maintain operational effectiveness in a rapidly shifting global landscape.
In senior Pentagon roles, Jim was responsible for day-to-day Air Force operational activities and directed the worldwide allocation of Air Force units toward the highest priorities of the Secretary of Defense. He also drove transformational change in how the Air Force organizes and deploys forces, led cross-service deliberations as a statutory member of the Joint Requirements Oversight Council, and helped guide the service’s long-term $1 trillion investment plan.
